Gamma Objectivity and Decoherence in the Scientific Register
The ultimate objectivity of the material world is the objectivity of it that science studies. And not only that, but science can only understand the invariant aspects of it. The weather is highly variant or non-linear, but it is still determinant. It is just that the things that determine it are so complex and multiple, that it becomes difficult to predict. And nonlinearity in other things that science studies often means that outcomes can be dependent upon tiny causes that cannot be pinned down. So there are not neat laws or equations that you can simply use to predict outcomes. Rather, we have to use vast computing power which runs alternative scenarios and models to look at what might happen and then makes statistical judgements. Which is precisely what we do with the weather forecasting. But what the computers are modelling is still based on principles of natural invariance. The weather system is still deterministic. It is just that we can never have all the information necessary to determine it completely.
Quantum uncertainty is fundamentally different. It is not that the information is "there" but inaccessible. It is fundamentally uncertain at a much deeper level.
In terms of the VGF quantum uncertainty is beta domain, and so is deterministic uncertainty like that of the weather, or of the famous "three body problem" in physics. The beta domain is the domain of active relational transformation between relatively stabilised closures.
The three-body problem is a good example of where stable bodies or closures in γ enter continuously coupled relational dynamics in β, and that β dynamics continuously produces their subsequent γ configurations (as we said earlier, beta is nested inside gamma)
A stable orbit — say the approximate two-body Earth–Sun relation — is itself a kind of β dynamic that has acquired closure-like stability. The β/γ distinction does not simply mean “dynamic versus static”. A γ closure can embody an internally ongoing β process. In the VGF closures are dynamically maintained rather than frozen objects, so to speak. The dynamics that maintain, are a question of scale, and evolution in time.
γ closure does not mean the cessation of β dynamics for that object or principle. It means that some higher-order identity has become invariant under a range of continuing β transformations.
This applies to an electron as much as to a stone, but the beta transformations in each case are quite different. An electron can be stably an electron while its position, momentum, spin relative to some axis, entanglement relations and future measurement outcomes remain unresolved. The closure “electron” therefore persists across a very large β possibility structure. The stone in contrast is a very highly decohered, redundantly recorded macroscopic γ closure. Its position, shape and persistence are constantly impressed into the environment through scattered photons, thermal radiation, contact interactions and so on. The electron, though, can remain deeply involved in coherent β-domain quantum relations until interaction and decoherence produce a particular γ-type record.
In the bigger VGF picture intelligence itself is a VGF closure. So in a quantum measurement the "measurement problem" part of the decoherence be considered as tied into the intelligence closure. Physical decoherence explains the formation of stable records; intelligence closes over those records to constitute them as measurements. Something that is γ relative to the quantum process becomes, as it enters intelligence, material for another β process.
The material universe first generates stable physical closures. Those closures eventually support organisms. Some organisms develop intelligence. Intelligence develops symbolic and mathematical closure. And that symbolic intelligence then constructs apparatus capable of deliberately coupling itself, through nested physical closures, back to quantum processes.
The measurement apparatus is therefore almost a physical extension of the intelligence closure into the quantum β–γ boundary. This does not mean intelligence collapses the wavefunction. It means:
Quantum decoherence can occur without intelligence, but quantum measurement as measurement belongs to a larger closure in which physical decoherence is coupled into evolved intelligence. The measurement problem therefore sits partly at the quantum β–γ boundary and partly at the higher-order closure through which stable physical records become determinate knowledge.
Modern decoherence theory already goes beyond the idea of one absolute boundary where "quantum ends and classical begins". In the VGF, decoherence as it is already understood in standard quantum mechanics is also interpreted as a nested sequence of closures, each of which can turn the γ output of one level into β input at another. The observer/intelligence closure is then not an arbitrary external addition to physics; it is one of the later closures generated by the same evolutionary cascade that produced the system being observed. Overall, quantum decoherence is a specific stage of VGF decoherence.
